To Avoid Global Recession…

November 16th, 2008

… All we need is the united volition of “world leaders.”

Right.

In a statement after the summit, Mr Bush said: “Whatever reforms are recommended, we need to be guided by this simple fact: that the best way to solve our problems and solve the people’s problems is for there to be economic growth. And the surest path to that growth is free market capitalism.”

The premise is correct: a free market is probably the best way to achieve economic growth. This is the sort of doublespeak that destroys language, destroys communication. Using this statement as a foundation for even more anti-market regulation, is a 100% non sequitir. To the extent that anyone still believes in free markets, each lazy, misguided, or downright malicious equivocation like this erodes that belief further, yet.

You can’t play market.

A dozen, a hundred, a thousand Ph.D. Economists, policy wonks, Statesmen, Presidents or Dictators can’t just use their notions of what a free market might do, as a roadmap for actually achieving that sort of equality and progress. They can’t decide to simply imagine a free market, and use that daydream as a guide to installing ham-fisted, top-down, coercive legislation and regulations, in order to achieve that vision of a “free” market.

A free market abhors these things.
