Damned if you do…

June 12th, 2007

Douglas Tompkins, a greedy American capitalist buys parts of Argentina, Chile.

No, he doesn’t plan on exploiting the virgin ecosystems of South America. He plans on conserving the land, because frankly, it’s not being conserved. Of course, the governments are complaining about his benevolence – even though he is fighting against the very tragedy of the commons they have so far encouraged.

…damned if you don’t. First, the capitalists don’t care about the environment. Then, when they do, spin appropriately.

Jobs Americans Won’t Do

June 8th, 2007

Go ahead and add picking asparagus to the list.

For some, it’s the fourth straight season of labor shortages and, growers say, a crisis for the state’s second largest industry (auto manufacturing is the largest)….As the first crop that needs picking, asparagus is a bellwether. If labor is lacking, it likely will be short for every other crop through October. Too few pickers will mean farmers must transfer workers who would otherwise be planting and fertilizing, or let the harvest rot.

These jobs pay $10-14 an hour – which is more money than I ever made until I graduated college. But, it’s an awful job: long and uncertain hours. Teenagers don’t want the jobs, people on UI won’t take them because UI generally pays almost that much, for doing nothing at all. So who does the jobs that nobody wants?

Nobody. The farmers are forced to plow under the crops. Don’t complain about the poor or the unemployed, when jobs are left on the table, and don’t bring up the needy or the hungry, when government policy forces people to destroy food. And if you have a single shred of human decency, and you’re honestly concerned about the plight of those worse-off, you’d show some compassion for the people who live on two cups of dirt a day, tilling soil with grandpa’s femur – when they want to come here and provide you with affordable food.

China: Still Oppressing People by the Millions

June 5th, 2007

A Stitch in Haste has a running thread of posts entitled “China is Still a Dictatorship…” which brings to light many grievances we ought to have with the world’s largest totalitarian regime. As of September, 2005, Kip noted that nearly 300,000 Chinese had been evicted in order to make room for Olympic Village.

The news today, according to Geneva-based Center on Housing Rights & Evictions, ups the ante, to a staggering 1.5 Million.

Not to worry, though. China’s version of Big Brother maintains that they’ve all been compensated, and that no one was forced to move – a statement qualified with “out of Beijing.” Which simply means, “we’ve forced you to move, but you get to choose where you want to go.” What else could it mean to the person whose homesite is now a long-jump pit or luxury box?

To be sure, a million and a half of Chinese undoubtedly have been forced to surrender their homes, and move to new ones, the prices of which have been inflated by the looming Olympics, bound to bring peace and prosperity to the country for a glorious two-and-a-half weeks. After which time, the value of the properties they’ve recently bought will begin to collapse, leaving them up shit creek, sans paddle.

Never you mind all the spurious economics behind the “public welfare” arguments – most studies indicate that publicly funded venues are not the boon to the local economy that their proponents maintain. These arguments aren’t even generally true in the USA – let alone a pseudo-communist regime like China. The more controlled is the economy, the less free the people, the more likely it is that whatever profits rents accrue due to the Olympics will fall disproportionately into the hands of politically-well-connected individuals and firms, i.e., those who are already very wealthy, at the expense of everyone else.
