People Wonder Why “They” Hate “Us”

December 16th, 2007

There are any number of reasons why “they” (e.g., brown people from the Mesopotamian region) hate “us”, about which I’m not going to speculate or pontificate at this present juncture — foreign policy, arms dealing, farm subsidies, puppet-governments, government financed coups d’états — the list goes on and on.

Needless to say, policing their neighborhoods with a Stalin-esque iron fist isn’t winning us any allies. In the video below, you’ll see a group of American soldiers who’ve apparently found a group of Iraqi looters, presumably guilty of stealing scrap wood to rebuild houses destroyed by our bombs. Ironically, the soldier who tells the Iraqis that the child should be in school is apparently either illiterate or half-retarded. The others relish in their moment on camera, to show the rest of the world how much of a man you can be if only you’ve got a .45 and an Abrams tank.

“Later, the car’s owner told us, ‘I’m a taxi driver. That car was my livelihood.‘”

No Surprises in Khartoum

November 30th, 2007

Thousands of protestors are reported to be rallying for the execution of British schoolteacher Gillian Gibbons, whose crime was expected to fetch up to 40 lashes but was later commuted to a mere 15 days in a third world prison, following which, she’ll be deported back to the civilized world.

“This an arrogant woman who came to our country, cashing her salary in dollars, teaching our children hatred of our Prophet Muhammad,” [the cleric, Abdul-Jalil Nazeer al-Karouri, a well-known hard-liner, told worshippers]…

Gibbons was arrested Sunday after another staff member at the school complained that she had allowed her 7-year-old students to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Read that last line, again. She allowed the students to name the bear Muhammad. The students, your children (7-year olds, at that) are the ones who chose the name — which happens to be the one of, if not the single most popular name in the world. Could it be because your children, at such a young age, are so enamored with your prophet that they chose it out of (perhaps mistaken) reverence and not disrespect.

Gibbons is arguably guilty of cultural ignorance, which in any civilized country, and to any civilized religion… Oh, what the fuck? You’ve heard it all before.

Cultural ignorance at the very least, is far less an affront to humanity than is abject ignorance.

Saudi Arabia – Trusted Allies

November 28th, 2007

In other, less amusing news, bowing to international pressure (i.e., Washington) the Saudis are agreeing to review the sentence of 200 lashes, meted out by the enlightened Sharia justice system to a 19-year old girl found guilty of riding in a car with a male who was not her brother or her husband. One hopes that they will commute this abomination in light of the extra-judicial 7-man gang-rape she has already suffered for her “crime.”

The plea for clemency is directed at the Saudi crown. The very same Saudi crown which recently

[R]eleased 1,500 members of Al Qaeda from prison, requiring them only to promise to refrain from jihad within the Arabian Peninsula.

Within the Arabian Peninsula? What about the REST OF THE FUCKING WORLD? Trusted Allies, indeed.
