Durbin Apology was absolutely embarrassing, uncalled for

June 22, 2005

I saw clips of the apology on Imus this morning, getting ready for work. I have to say, I was absolutely embarrassed by the apology. It sickens me. He is apologizing for a perceived slight, something that he didn’t say, that was inferred by spin-doctors and blown up in the press.

Be a fucking man and own your words. Deny that you called our soldiers Nazis and Pinkos and maoists, or whatever the right is accusing you of saying. Tell them to “roll the fucking audio-tape, and show me where I said those things.”

Tell them to stop making this an argument about semantics. Tell them to address the issues of human rights, geneva conventions, questionable legality, complete lack of transparency. Tell them to stop resorting these apples-to-oranges arguments.

And tell them you’re not sorry if you offended them, and perhaps the source of their feelings is that what you said really starts to hit home. Nothing like the sudden realization and suppression of guilt to “offend” someone, eh?

And Trent Lott should own his words, too. He should say, “Hey, you clueless liberal bastards, I was trying to be nice to an old man and a friend on his birthday. An old man who WOULD have been a better President than Jack Kennedy, Jimmy Carter or Lyndon Johnson. If you don’t like it, tough.” The left can call Republicans Nazis and racists with impugnity, but God forbid Republicans ever question their patriotism.
