some news

July 7, 2005

Had a good time at John’s 4th of July party last weekend. I got some new books, namely John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty and Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan. I have started reading Mill right now, and it’s fucking amazing. I suppose like any other serious work, it rings very true and relevant to things at present.

If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had th epower, would be justified in silencing mankind…But the peculiar evil of silencin gthe expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race…

If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchangin error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livlier impression of truth

I used to always tell people to consider every angle, to question your own beliefs, because it is in this way, and in this way only, that we can identify the truths, reject the untruths, and strengthen our own philosophies.

I also purchased V for Vendetta, a graphic novel by Alan Moore. I just opened that one a bit ago, and it is looking like quite the promising read. They’re turning it into a movie with Hugo Weaving and that skirt from new Star Wars movies, I think.

anyway, I’m working on a few new thoughts right now– one of them is regarding the restriction du jour, smoking bans. I’m also working on a list of common pitfalls that I seem to encounter when engaged in discourse with: there are a few fallacies that sneak up on me, additionally I often fall into arguing down to their level.

gotta work on that shit, i suppose.
