post hoc, erego propter hoc

September 28, 2005

This is a classic example of the post hoc, ergo propter hoc logical fallacy. Thank the institution. The authorities have the gall to blame “the use of alcohol by minors” for the officer’s death.

Radley Balko has the scoop.

Or is it the use of tactics that encourage officers to behave illegally, or in manners which present a semblance of illegality, in order to “fit in” with the criminal element. I don’t even want to talk about the basic issue at hand, prohibiting alcohol for a certain subset of legal adults… absurdity abounds.

what about the unauthorized discharge of his firearm? It is NEVER appropriate for an officer in a crowd to fire bullets into the air (Gravity, my friend) and to do so would constitute a break in the force continuum, reckless endangerment, and possibly criminal negligence.
