I’m glad to read that someone in Detroit still has enough common sense to cease entertaining the idea of a ban on pitbulls. The article itself cites the extraordinary costs that would’ve been imposed by such a ban.

Under the proposed ordinance, any pit bull puppies older than 8 weeks would have had to be taken from the city or put to death, and permits would have been required for those traveling through the city with the dogs.

Current pit bull owners, who would have been grandfathered in under the proposed ban, would have needed to license their dogs, take out $100,000 worth of liability insurance for each dog and have the animal spayed or neutered.

You see, the people who’s dogs bite others are already negligent for a tort. Placing severe restrictions on this particular breed of dog will likely decrease the number of those dogs, but they will be increasingly held by people who lack the means or motivation to abide by the new, more restrictive measures. Ultimately, the victim will be no more likely to receive any recompense for the tort.

…And… something tells me that in a city where nobody pays their taxes, or otherwise obeys the law, that such a restriction would’ve been nearly impossible to enforce. This type of proposal is yet another example of cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face. Because bad people do something, and the police are utterly unable to control that thing, we are going to ban it for everyone.

Because, you know, “Somebody ought to do something!”
