In a typical backwards manner, the Vatican speaks out against “Freedom of Speech”:

The Vatican deplored the violence but said certain provocative forms of criticism were unacceptable.

“The right to freedom of thought and expression … cannot entail the right to offend the religious sentiment of believers,” the Vatican said in its first statement on the controversy.”

Because, you know, if we can’t challenge the basic tenents of established religion, the Catholic church would never have had to succumb to the enlightenment of the masses, we’d all still believe that leeches cured leprosy, and that the sun revolves around the earth, and that whites can’t marry mud-people, and all the other backwards gobbledygook that’s been perpetrated by the Church throughout the millenia…

I know, it’s been done to death, and I’ve remained pretty much silent on the issue, I probably will do so in the future, too, but in the meantime, I’m testing a hypothesis.
