When you were in school – did you ever, and I mean, ever, do all of the reading you were assigned? Come on. Now, let’s assume that you know a good portion of it is material you’ll never be tested on or otherwise held accountable for? Would you read it then?

Now, let’s assume you’ve already graduated college, you’re a hack-attorney somewhere from a wealthy family who’s managed to secure a seat in the House, with all the political perks and private jets and oval-office-fellatio you could imagine — still think you’re going to do your assigned “reading”?

Neither do I.

Via the LP News: this is precisely what we need to clean up congress – or at least it’s a start. I’ll be interested in hearing which congressman is eager to sponsor this bill. In fact, I’ll send him a thank-you letter, personally.

I particularly like the following analysis, simple enough:

It’s a two-pronged attack: If legislators vote to approve the bill, they will be required to read legislation thoroughly. Under this restriction a host of onerous — and massively expensive — bills would never have been approved. On the other hand, if members of the House and Senate choose instead to vote against the act, they will be admitting that they don’t read legislation before voting on it and that they have no intention of doing so.

Unfortunately, we’d probably end up leaving Congress to police thelselves. I have absolutely no faith in their ability to do so. They’re currently proposing a Bill that would drastically limit the viability of any third party intrusion into the current political status quo.
