As you may well know, I’m currently working towards an MA in Economics. I am weighing my options, though, and considering switching to a Master’s of Science in Finance, instead.
Basically, the MSF program, if you specialize in “Economics” consists of all of the MAE courses I’m required to take, except I would no longer need to take “Early & Classical Economic Thought.” Considering that I own “Wealth of Nations,” and I’ve read Cournot’s Monopoly, and I intend to read Marx in the future (summer reading) – this is not a tremendous loss for me.
And I’d also get to take some classes like “Financial Stmt Analysis,” “Public Finance (also an Econ elective) and “Investments.” Nifty. And because I had “International Finance” as an undergrad, I get to replace it with an approved elective. The problem is, you can do a thesis paper in the MAE, but it’s not an option in the MSF. I kind of have my heart set on writing one (I’m not sure what about, yet) but I think I’ve found a way around it.
My challenge then, is convincing them to allow me to write an Econ Thesis for an MSF Elective. It will delay my graduation by one academic quarter, but I think the MSF is probably a more marketable degree. If then, at a later date, I decided to re-pursue the MAE as an additional degree, I would basically have the luxury of taking a bunch of electives – focusing my studies on whatever I want to learn.
your thoughts?
(they don’t offer a dual Master’s degree program, I already thought of that)
