Evil Capitalist…

I’d like to take a moment of your time to press the point that it is precisely because of our largely capitalist economic system, that people like Warren Buffett are able to make such donations - which certainly is charity in a true sense of the word. Don’t count on the government to take care of people in need, government does a very poor job at nearly all of its charges.

In fact, our system, though far from perfect, permits lowly cubicle-dwellers like me, up to our eyeballs in college-loan debt to give to charity. Sure, the amount of money I give may appear negligible, but I’m fairly certain it makes a difference. My charity of choice is SmileTrain.org, which provides the facial/plastic/reconstructive surgery to babies born with cleft lip/palate in predominately third world countries. One of their mass-mailings arrived at my desk one day, finding me in a particularly benevolent mood. I took a gander, looked up some information about the organization, and decided to arrange for a very meager monthly donation.

This is far from a bleg of any sort - but if you’re really, honestly looking for a charitable cause, look some of them up. See what they do, who they benefit, how they’re financed, what percentage of their revenue goes to their cause directly. Find one that you like, and make a small donation. Freedom makes it possible.
