If your interest is in regulating product “A,” it’s all but retarded to ban things that, by definition, are “not-A.” The Washington State courts upheld the ban on gay marriages, leaving Massachussetts as the only state in the union where gay and lesbian marriages are state-sanctioned. I found the following rationale to be disturbing, to say the least:
The state appealed, arguing that it has a legitimate interest in regulating relationships that produce children.
By definition – and basic biology – don’t gay marriages not produce children? So, if you’re interest is in regulating child-producing marriages, go after the heteros. If you’re interested instead, in promulgating bigotry and injustice, uphold the ban on gay marriages.
Three cheers for inequality. Huzzah.
