Every day in Detroit is a shitty day. Today is no exception:
Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is in the news again – and surfuckingprise – it’s more allegations of impropriety:
Detroit officials acknowledged Wednesday that a tax-exempt community fund paid $8,605 for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his family to spend a week at a posh California resort last August.
He uses tax-exempt fund to pay for family vacation in California, under the auspice of “fundraising.” What sort of fundraising a local politician can do 3,000 miles outside his jurisdiction is beyond me. I’m afraid this is simply par-for-the course, like his infamous $25,000, 12-month lease paid for by the City. For his wife. Or some of his numerous other expenses. For good measure.
Addint insult to injury, on Tuesday, 22% of Detroit’s fire trucks were out of commission for one reason or another. Read it, and weep:
[At one fire,] another pumper was smoking. It was Engine 46. And while it managed to continue working that night, firefighters said it had overheated earlier in the day and was out of service for 3 hours. The insulation around its motor sometimes catches fire, and its operator must stop what he’s doing and put it out…
…On Tuesday [May 9, 2007], Engine 46 — the pumper that was smoking while it worked at the Caldwell blaze — broke down and went out of service… Ladder 18 was working that day — even though it could not raise its ladder.
I’m pretty much at a loss for words here.
