Let me stop you, right here. “En retard” is not French for “a retard.” It’s french for tardy, late, slow, &c., in context.

I have been en retard in my blogging the last week, because I was busy working on an essay. I finalized my submission for the Stanford Liberty, which aims to be an informal hard-copy (as well as online) collaboration for libertarian thought.

In the interest of not stealing its thunder, I’m witholding self-publication of the essay for the time being. As a teaser, it’s further examination of social insurance, using my previous post on the topic as the skeletal framework:

…Ordinary analysis recognizes that private insurers (i.e., people interested in making money) will not insure certain risk at premiums that the risk-prone are willing to pay. So because insurers are unwilling to give in to demand, (nevermind the fact that the potential insured parties are equally unwilling to pay the asked price) they posit that private companies cannot insure against these risks, and jump to a conclusion that is two-fold: Government can insure these risks, and also that government must insure against these risks…

I think it comes in at about 1,700 words – so it’s quite a bit longer than my intial post. Even still, there are alot of questions left unanswered for brevity’s sake. As always, I encourage discourse and I’m happy to answer any questions in order to provide clarification.
