Cyber Squatting

July 16th, 2007

Being somewhat in the market for a new car, I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at various makes and models on the web. When I put nissan.com into my address bar, I was surprised not to find the website for Nissan Motors, but rather, something else. Take a look for yourself, or read Mr. Nissan’s story.

Presently, a court order prevents him from using his family name on his website to promote his business(es) that he owns, because Nissan Motors somehow acquired a superior right to the use of the brand name “Nissan.” Even though Mr. Nissan’s businesses were incorporated when Nissan was known as Datsun, and he has been doing business ever since.

Seems pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.
