A few days ago, I said:

Sooner or later, the ass-hat with a rifle is going to walk into the wrong mall, the wrong bank, the wrong restaurant — the one where someone else is not afraid to stand his or her ground. I’d certainly rather it start happening sooner, than later.

I should’ve added “the wrong church” to the list of examples. Because my “sooner or later” scenario was fulfilled by an ass-hat with a rifle (and some handguns, and 1,000 rounds of ammunition) took it upon himself to wreak havoc across Colorado during a day-long rampage that left a handful of dead in its wake. And it undoubtedly would’ve been more than a handful, were it not for an armed security guard (not the police) who got the drop on him:

“I saw him coming through the doors,” [private security guard Jeanne Assam] told reporters on Monday. “I took cover, and I waited for him to get closer, and I came out of cover and identified myself, and engaged him, and took him down. And that’s pretty much it.”

Will gun control advocates recognize this instance? Would gun control advocates permit you, or your bank, or your church, to hire someone with a gun to protect you, the vault, or the congregation? If so, the mental gymnastics are astounding — that you could conceivably hire someone (if only you have enough money) to protect your life and your property, but that you could not be legally authorized to defend the same on your own.

Simply laughable, if it weren’t so mind-bogglingly anti-life.

I will tally this as a success for any advocate of guns in the hands of private citizens, although my ideal scenario would’ve involved an armed and knowledgeable Samaritan. In any regards, I’m ecstatic that this happened sooner, rather than later.

Would that it never need to happen at all. But it does. And until the gun control advocates recognize that there are times in our lives when the police cannot protect us, I’ll have to keep reminding them.
