Translation Request

January 10th, 2009

Any of my readers who speak or could translate from Lithuanian?

I’ve been getting traffic from a forum with a .lt top-level domain.

The post is here, and is referencing my primer on Malinvestment;. It appears to be a financial/economics forum of some sort, but I know zero Lithuanian. I don’t even know if “Lithuanian” is a language, although I presume it is.

About My Publishing Schedule

January 6th, 2009

Some people say that I should maintain a more regular post schedule.  You can read them at your own leisure.  I’m too anxious.  When I have a good post, I don’t want to withhold it, I don’t want to keep it from the few readers I’m lucky enough to have.

The last three posts, published moments apart, are the result of having spent 5 hours on a 757-200, geographically between Detroit and Los Angeles, situationally, sandwiched between two large men.

(Note: seats 33A, 33B and 33C on a 757-200 have access to a 110V outlet.  Very nice!)

I listened to metal, reviewed some cached articles & blogs that I wanted to read, knocked out some work e-mails, and ripped out three solid posts.

They’re yours to enjoy.  And submit to reddit.  Or STR. Or Digg.  Or whatever. Thanks to all of you for reading & making it worthwhile.

Happy belated new year.

Metablogging: WordPress Hack

December 24th, 2008

Last month this website was hacked. Whatever happened, completely disabled the site and the WordPress admin panel. I thought the problem was resolved until a few days later when I noticed my pagerank had fallen from 4 to 0, overnight.

Google Webmaster Tools showed a list of “keywords” that Googlebot sees, surprise! They were all spam keywords. I searched everything I could think of in blog content, but the words didn’t exist. I did submit a request for review to Google but didn’t hear anything back. There is not much information on what to do about this, I’m surprised Google doesn’t have better resources to help people diagnose or fix this problem.

I gave up on it, because I thought a fresh install of WP 2.7 would fix the problem. Keywords still showed as spam, but I figured maybe those didn’t get updated very frequently. Waiting…

Then, after installing Adsense recently, the problem became apparent. I checked the cached versions of some pages, viewed page source: nothing.

Viewed same cached pages at “text only” and bam! The page was loaded with spam, buried in the footer. I removed the call for wp_footer, since my footer is blank anyways, and all of my best programmers and developers are working on resolving the problem in its entirety. They removed a malicious cookie in Base64 encoding, and a few other suspicious lines of code in various places in the directories.

Further bulletins as events warrant.
