RE: Boston & The Quad Laser

February 1st, 2007

via Yahoo! News:

“It’s clear the intent was to get attention by causing fear and unrest that there was a bomb in that location,” Assistant Attorney General John Grossman said at their arraignment. “The appearance of this device and its location are crucial,” [he] said. “This device looks like a bomb.”

Oh, really? Lite-Brite-Ignignokt really looks like plastique? See for yourself: Below is a picture of the “device,” and via Wikipedia, actual c-4. Picture uploader dealy isn’t working, so just follow the link.

Idiots.

We can’t take shampoo and toothpaste on airplanes. What’s next, bans on Lite Brites?

No One Can Defeat the Quad Laser

January 31st, 2007

Perhaps nobody can defeat Ignignoc and Err’s quad laser. According to the Boston Herald:

[Boston] City Councilor Michael Flaherty was fuming and demanded that Turner Broadcasting “reimburse the city of Boston for every dime spent today on this serious public safety threat. It’s outragoues (sic), reckless and totally irresponsible. What a waste of resources.”

The outrageous, reckless, and totally irresponsible waste of resources was a marketing gimmick gone awry for Turner Network’s “Adult Swim.” So what does Flaherty want – a refund?
Ignignoc

Nobody gets a refund when the State screws up. You don’t get a refund when border patrol tears apart your car. You don’t get a refund if you’re wrongly convited and require a defense attorney. And you don’t get refunded if you’re convicted and later exonerated. And every time the State overreacts, private citizens shouldn’t be asked to “refund” the mistake. The only reason the State has the financial wherewithal to commit such blunders is because they’ve taken your money in the first place. To ask for more money, because they’ve mishandled the initial sum, is absurd.

This isn’t synonymous with charging people for excessive rescue and salvage costs when their snowmobiles crash through Houghton Lake. No, this is the natural reaction of an overly paranoid, sissified populace, on edge because they’re engaged in a never-ending war with a nameless, faceless enemy – clamoring to Papa Government for protection.

I don’t want to sound the alarm, but dude, the terrorists are winning.

Today’s Sign J.M. Keynes is Alive & Well

January 31st, 2007
Today’s Keynesianism, courtesy of Yahoo! Finance:

Although interest rates are still relatively low by historical standards, some fear that as a result of the previous rate hikes, consumers and corporations will eventually cut back on spending, which could have a drastic effect on the economy.

Because: Y = C+I+G+NX

Income = Consumption + Investment Spending + Gov’t Spending + (Exports – Imports)

Ergo, a diminution in the right-hand side of the equation implies a diminution in the left-hand side of the equation, Income, aka, GDP, aka “the economy.”

But you see, the whole problem with Keynes’ “circular flow diagram” is just that: a circle, having by definition neither beginning nor end, indicates no cause and effect, no intertemporal relationship – all we see is that if C decreases, in order to maintain our cleverly crafted accounting identity, so too must I; c.p.

It is not at all clear why less current consumption, especially at the micro-level, but even at the macro-level, must be a cause (or even a symptom) of financial hardship.
