Libertarian Radio?

January 3rd, 2006

I’m excited to find out tonight that Penn Jillette is now hosting a radio show, carried by my local CBS affiliate. It will be an hour long, syndicated show from Vegas. Kickass.

Penn Jillette is a pretty smart individual, and although he’s made a living doing magic shows, he’s a card-carrying libertarian. I’ve always been taken by his ability to blend his libertarian ideology with humor and wit.

Regarding the concept of Free Speech, he cites statistics of increasing parity with regard to the number of errors per article in the venerable Encyclopedia Britannica and the anarcho-libertarian wet-dream, Wikipedia.

an excertp from today’s show, discussing a very Jeffersonian notion of free speech:

Q: “Why are advertisements not protected by the First Amendment? Why can’t someone take out a billboard that reads: Do Heroin, it’s fun. In the marketplace of ideas, isn’t that the point?”

A: “Because someone has to babysit us, right?”

hope to get a few ideas out of it, I’m sure I’ll be tuning in a few times a week.
