If you love it so much, why don’t you marry it?

January 11th, 2006

Now, I’ve never had a boner (heheheh, i said “boner”) for Economics before… But I’ve come close. Here’s the story:

Two semesters, 3 Economics courses, and several thousand dollars after being accepted to the MAE program at Wayne State Univeristy, in Detroit, I was apprised of some most unrighteous information: Almost none of the Graduate level Economics courses are offered in the evenings. This was an eventuality that I had not even considered – after all, what self-respecting institution of higher learning would require Graduate students to be in lecture on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10a-Noon?

So I finished my courses there in December, and about a week before Christmas, learned that Walsh College offers an MAE program, or an MBA with a specialization in Economics, if that’s your fancy. And Walsh, just so happens to be 2 miles from my work, instead of 20 on the freeway, in rush hour. And despite the fact that it’s a private school, the tuition is close to what I was paying at Wayne. And I don’t have to worry about alms for the beggars in Detroit. Or paying $4 to park in the garages downtown, 4 nights a week. Or the extra 200 miles a week I was putting on my lease.

I mean, it couldn’t get any better than that, could it?

Well, yes, in fact it could. You see, Wayne’s Economics program struck me as very Keynesian. And looking ahead to the courses, it also struck me as very statistically oriented. Not my cup of tea, but I was willing to bear it.

You can, of course, imagine my surprise when, at the book store, the required reading was comprised of books I’ve read, like Hayek, Friedman (chicagoan, I know…) and of authors whose names I’ve heard of, like Menger. Hell, one of the books was published by “The Libertarian Press” or something like that. I sat down in class and overheard students behind me talking about Rothbard. “This must be a fluke,” I tell myself. The term “Austrian” is thrown around a bit.

And then the professor arrives, his e-mail address is “AustrianEcon@….” You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. And he launches into the introduction to basically the whole MAE program, and how Walsh is developing a nice reputation as The Austrian school (outside of Hillsdale College) in Michigan.

I’ve never been so excited to go to school, in my entire life.
