Instant Classic: 40-37

September 24th, 2006

Despite myriad Notre Dame misgivings early (turnovers for points) and throughout (lots and lots of penalties) the Irish prevailed over the Spartans with a nearly flawless fourth quarter. Those of you who changed the channel at haftime would do well to watch ESPN classic next week, when the game will probably be replayed. Otherwise, watch your Sportscenter tomorrow.

In the Michigan autumn rain, missed extra points (on both sides), missed 2-pt conversions, interception returns, solid defenses, offensive heroics — it was an extraordinarily dramatic game. Tonights matchup between Michigan State University and Notre Dame certainly qualifies as an “instant classic.”

For those of you who would suggest that Notre Dame benefits from God’s benevolence: Boston College suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of NC State, with 8 seconds remaining. If God exists, he does not wager on college football.
