Would he still make this sacrifice if he knew he wasn’t protecting our “freedom”?

September 3rd, 2012

The child this young man holds in his arms, by my guess is probably only a few weeks old. The tears he’s hiding behind his hands are very, very real. The pain he must feel in his heart, in every fiber of his being, unimaginable.

The caption reads: "This Dad is about to be deployed and is having to say goodbye to his newborn baby girl. Sacrifices like this are made every day, and may we be reminded, that our FREEDOM comes with a cost, and our soldiers and their families are paying it."

As is all effective pro-war propaganda, this image is indeed a stirring one, putting the spotlight on those he leaves behind, portraying his noble sacrifice for the greater good rather than the deception that puts this young man in harms way and daily threatens any chance of ever seeing his baby again.

Would he still make this sacrifice if he knew he wasn’t protecting our “freedom”? That he wasn’t “making the world safer” for that precious baby girl of his? That he is merely a pawn in some rich man’s wars?

I doubt it.

The only reason he’s leaving this little girl is because he’s been lied to.

And if we owe them anything it’s not gratitude or respect, not worshi ppingthe lies they’re fighting and dying for, but rather to inform and remind of these deceptions in hopes that some, even one of them will do the right thing, instead.

Cops Beat Up Black College Student (Video)

August 20th, 2012

Ronald Weekly is a college student at Xavier University. He was recently stopped by a member of the Venice CA police department, according to his sister, for “riding his skateboard on the wrong side of the street”. What happened in the immediacy of that detention is unclear, but what we know now is that Weekly has suffered a broken nose, broken cheekbone and a concussion at the hands of the Venice CA police department.

Venice Cops Beating up Ronald Weekly

At least 4 officers were involved in the gang beating of Weekly, and it’s on YouTube thanks to some quick-thinking bystanders, who unfortunately captured it as a dreaded “vertical video”

Regardless of whatever happened leading up to this, it is pretty clear that the three officers have a handle on Weekly, who is semi-restrained, prostrate, and pinned by two of them, by the time this video cuts in.

Yet at the 22-second mark of this video, you can CLEARLY see one officer wind up and punch Weekly in the face. Regardless of whatever happened leading up to this, that last punch is unarguably criminal battery and that fucking pig should lose his job and benefits, and be charged accordingly.

By the end of the video there are perhaps a dozen police officers or more. At least four of them are trying to usher the onlookers further and further away, keeping the camera as far from the incident as possible. Whatever started this incident, it’s probably safe to assume that it wasn’t worth 12 cops and loads of paperwork and a video about to go viral portraying the Venice PD as just the next group of thugs in uniform.

Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie…

July 6th, 2012

Since the Obama administration has twisted the definition of “enemy combatant” to include “anyone who’s close enough to get exploded by a US missile”, I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see a video like this one, where some “heroes” from the 101st Airborne fire a missile at two people walking across the street. And then laugh about it while singing “American Pie”.

And then open fire machine guns on the first responders, which I’m pretty sure is a war crime.

Propaganda is often created to portray soldiers as doing a duty, and that they do not want or like to kill. That is probably true for many, even most soldiers, despite the desensitizing and dehumanizing training that is designed to encourage them otherwise.

“It’s almost impossible to act on your morality. . . . You remove the humanity from them — beat them — and in doing so you remove humanity from yourself.” — Carlos Mejia

It is pretty clear to me that these guys get off on killing. And anyone who gets off on killing is a sociopath, exactly the sort of person who should not be allowed anywhere near a sharp objects, let alone allowed to pilot or gun a fully armed Apache helicopter.

Is there another side to this story? Some secret that might otherwise justify stealth firing a missile at two men walking across the street? Maybe. Even if they’re justified in engaging actual enemy combatants isn’t it disturbing to see someone so callous about taking another life that they would laugh about it?

Just like the “good cop” meme, people will write this off as the uncontrollable actions of “a few bad apples”.  Well, this raises a host of questions about how the bad apples keep making their way in to the system in the first place, and why we only find out about their actions from “leak” sites (don’t the “good” guys want to get these cancers out of their ranks?). No. The fact of the matter is that are probably more bad apples who didn’t get caught and this isn’t an isolated incident.

The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.

Even if the bad apples are a small minority, that makes it worse, because that means there is a large majority of “good” soldiers who look the other way when things like this, or Abu Ghraib, or the trophy killings, or the gang rapes, or the massacres, go down.

That makes them just as bad.
